Canon WC-DC52 Wide Angle Converter Lens

Strengths: Easy to load on camera, easy to carry

I have only used this lenes about 25 pictures so far. I took some shoots with the wide lenses and then without it. This lenses really helps with items just outside the focal area. I was surprised about items I missed when I didn't have the lenses in use. I will continue with updates. So far so good.

Not compatible with all cameras

Strengths: Sharp image

Weakness: Glass on rear end is small

I bought this lens to use with my Panasonic GS400 camcorder which has a 43mm diameter lens barrel. As the WC-DC52 has a 52mm diameter rare end, I thought it will work with my camcorder with a step-up ring. However, the images had serious vignetting (dark rings at the edges of the image). When I observed the rare end of the lens, I found that the lens is actually of a smaller diameter (possibly 37mm) though the lens threads are 52mm. So, if your native camera lens diameter is more than 37mm, you might end up getting vignetting. Otherwise, the image is sharp and should serve your purpose provided your camera matches with this lens.

Canon Wide Angle Adapter

Strengths: Pretty good imaging, can be used with other canon cameras

Weakness: Requires special adapter, which is unique to camera.

I purchased this lens to use in conjunction with a Canon A540 I recently purchased. Using a wide-angle adapter is no substitute for an D-SLR or compact with a true wide angle capable zoom lens. You will lose some light and image quality (it may or may not be noticable). However, it is compact, easy to carry, and handy when you really need a wide-angle lens to capture the subject. Just keep in mind it will work best in bright light situations.

The wide angle lens does require the purchase of a separate adapter to mount to your particular camera. Many canon hand helds can use the lens, but the adapter (around $20) may be unqiue to a specific model (like mine). But, it is cheaper to buy an adapter then a wide angle lens for each camera you own...
