Affordable Housing for a great Camera

Strengths: - Cheap - Fits very well - Easy to use - large buttons - Floats

Weakness: - Floats - Garish orange, blue and yellow highlights

I'm very happy with my purchase in terms of value for money. The only other underwater housing I was able to locate for a canon G9 was 3x the price. The housing fits my new canon g9 like a glove and it feels solid enough that I am not worried about any accidents ruining my camera. No fogging problems on any of my dives, I have only used it for a few warm water dives however.

From all of the photos of this product on the web, I thought the front of the case was gray, but this is actually the diffusion a semi-transparent, detachable piece of plastic.

The positively buoyant nature of the case can add some difficulty in positioning, but that is balanced with not losing it and you camera in the briny deep in the event of accidentally dropping it. I believe Canon sells additional weights to make this case neutrally buoyant which seems a little cheeky.

Fogs up

Strengths: Easy access to most functions

Weakness: No access to macro focus function and no hot shoe for strobe.

Ordinarily, even with no access to a vital function & only the on-camera flash available, this would be a good deal at $160-220.

It's not a good deal, because of design flaws. The battery is very strong & may be making more heat. Whatever the cause, this housing fogs every time at 2' snorkeling or 60' diving. Canon shrugs its shoulders. Continual fogging will trash the camera--Canon says the warranties will not cover the camera if it "gets wet," & then they send repeated lectures on proper loading into the housing.

Meanwhile, I got dessicant--clear pack indicator dessicant--& got about 6 of them squeezed in there, carefully avoiding the o-ring seal. The difference was marginal. This housing will fog in 10-40 minutes every single time, giving you great shots with the bottom 3rd FOGGED OUT. Not too good if you're in Tahiti with no alternative.

In the end, I found myself turning the camera off every few minutes & drifting so it could cool off. But that hardly works with great shots passing by.

My experience is based on 3 dives & about 20 shallow reef snorkel outings--all fogged.

I did a 106 minute dive with no fogging the first time out. Next time it fogged, I brought it up and found a hair on the o-ring. I'll try again in the next day or two. I find it difficult to believe the housing itself routinely fogs. Between my wife and I, we've had 6 housed digital Oly or Canon cameras and the foggings we've had have been temperature related or lack of a good seal.

The button to the left of the center function button is the macro button. I've yet to figure out how to change the shutter speed or aperature underwater.... guess I'll have to read the directions some day if I can't figure it out on my own. 2-3 dives really isn't enough to draw up any conclusions, I've had some break in time to get comfortable with every camera I've housed.

Just a followup on my comment.... No fogging in several dives since cleaing the O-ring and I also found that all dial functions could be accessed with the housing using the "s" button in the left corner. Pretty good camera, takes nifty video also.

My housing fogged up badly the first time I used it in the cold water at 80 ft deep. The condensation inside the housing was bad, you can even see large water droplets. I went home and careful took the o-ring seal off. I pushed my two thumbs at the top of the yellow rubber o-ring and gentlely removed it from the case. I then lightly put it back making sure that the o-ring is evenly distributed. I have not seen the fog nor the condensation since. I agree the case is shipped out of manufacture with problem but with little adjustment, it will work wonderfully as it should be. This is my second Canon underwater housing unit. Both work good.

The only problem I have with the housing is its large lenses area obstructs the strobe and the bottom right of the picture is darken since it is not lighted. I must use the diffuser all the time and it helps but nowhere pass the standard strobe lighting requirement. If strobe light is important, this housing is not for you.

is it possible to change the f-stop and the shutter speed when in manual function? when I looked at the G9 in the store today, it looked like the only way to change those was through the spin dial... but I think I read that the underwater housing does not give access to the spin dial? I usually program one of the custom to f5.6 and 1/125 as that will arrest most movement. Then I use the strobe to adjust the lighting. When in shallow water, though, its sometimes nice to be able to change the f-stop and still keep the shutter speed high. For super macro shots, I usually set the f-stop as high as it will go, f8.0 or higher, and the shutter to 1/200 or even 1/250 so I can get really close without washing out the picture. If I can't change f-stop and shutter speed easily, this little beauty of a camera is going to lose its beauty a little.

2 problems with this housing.

Fogging: imaging you are in front of a pigmy sea horse that is not bigger than 2cm and your camera is fogged up. I clean the o-ring the first time and I was carefull not to put too much grease on it...Didn't work. Cleaned the second time, wiping the o-ring first and then adding more grease this time. It worked, it was ok after that I did about 6-8 dives in 3 days with no problem.

Diffuser: Big problem for shooting macro.
First the macro on this camera is about 0.5cm which is great but not good when the zoom compartment is so big that your macro becomes about 3-4cm and on top of that the diffuser do not work properly if you are close to your subject. Bottom half of the picture is black. The only way is move away from the subject but then again your are no longer in macro since you are bout 10-15cm away from the subject.

You would really expect that a worldwide company like Canon would have resolved the problem before hand and not use us the customers as guinea-pig.
