Canon PowerShot S400 4 Megapixel Compact Camera -...

Strengths: Canon Reputuation - lens, compact dimensions, weight reduction from previous models, updated software for transferring.

Weakness: That damn red-eye reduction is tempermental.

I've had the camera for less than a week & I 'm loving it.
Canon knows how to out do itself from time to time. Some of the features from the Canon G3 have been installed in this little bugger. There are quite a few improvements in this unit over the Powershot S230. The additional megapixels and features are worth the price. I got my camera from a local store in Pasadena, CA. I paid $466.00 for the unit. I just couldn't wait for Dell's $450.00 offter (no tax/shipping). This is a great companion to take around on a daily basis. I carry this camera on my hip next to my cell phone.
Take care you all...God Bless America.

Canon PowerShot S400 4 Megapixel Compact Camera -...

Strengths: size, picture quality, durable, state-of-the-art technology, usability.

Weakness: 320x240 video resolution

Absolutely the most advanced pocket-size digicam. Also a true competitor to bigger ones, say S45 and m:ju.
This is your choice if you wan't first of all a small camera, but also a camera wich can produce high-quality photos. This camera follows you everywhere in your pocket and is always ready for good shots.

Canon S400

Strengths: Versatile, lightweight, cheap CF memory, rechargeable battery, Movie mode w/sound, easy operation.

Weakness: Short battery life (buy an extra), crappy little plastic USB connection cover

This is my first digital camera experience & I went with Canon for name brand and the positive reviews I read. Overall it has been a good camera even though I had to take it in for repairs twice. The first time the switch to change from shooting to review mode broke off. The second time the image processor went and all my daylight pictures were washed out. This happened on vacation which was quite annoying. To Canon's credit they repaired it at no cost (other than the cost FedEx'ing to them), even though the warrtyyt expired a month earlier.

Holding up

Strengths: Sturdy, simple to use

Weakness: Dial can break easily, night shots. No video editing software

I've owned it for almost 2 years and never had a problem. I'm afraid the dial will brake, I like how the newer models use an up/down switch for choosing play or record mode.

Canon PowerShot S400 4 Megapixel Compact Camera -...

Strengths: Easy to use, sturdily built, fantastic pics, movie clips with sound, convenient to carry, did I mention the fantastic pics?

Weakness: None for what it was designed to do!

There is no excuse to NOT have this camera with you at all times and get those shots you're always missing. Some tips, keep the battery warm - it lasts longer (I get 200 shots out of mine), get some extra batteries (hi-caps are available for as little as $9), turn off the flash for most daytime shots and the battery will go even further (up to 300 shots) and keep the small & handy charger with you and plugged in (if you can) with an extra battery for long shoots. Also, the low battery indicator is in the upper right hand corner of the LCD, it gives plenty of warning for needing to change out the battery (apparently no one pays attention as a common criticism of the camera is that there is no indicator???). Keep the camera in the old ELPH Jr APS leather case, it fits perfectly snug and you won't scratch up the exterior (mine looks like new after 4 months of daily use). Read the manual, it'll help with red-eye and lots of other issues! Bigger CF card? Jeez, they're available for as little as $30 with a rebate for a 256 meg card. I've had every digital ELPH since the S100, this one is the greatest so far, I can't wait for a 5MP, 4 power zoom version.

Canon PowerShot S400 4 Megapixel Compact Camera -...

Strengths: extremely compact, metal body (sexy), bright crisp lcd, takes beatiful pictures and movies, excellent repair service

Weakness: lcd is not protected by glass, so can be fragile

I've been extremely happy with this camera. I did manage to crack the lcd screen, and I had to return to canon for repair (which they did for free).

I recently broke a pin in the CF reader of the camera and had to return to canon for service. They not only replaced the memory reader, but replaced the lcd backlight and cleaned and updated the camera for free (out of warranty).

I would say the service at canon is excellent.

Canon PowerShot S400 4 Megapixel Compact Camera -...

Strengths: Unlike what the article tells you, this camera has the most manual controls in any compact camera / 4 MP res. / Glass lens, which is really clear / 3x zoom in a compact / Great battery life (I can shoot all day on a single charge and photography is what I

Weakness: No aperture or manual focus controls / Lens gives noticible barrel distortion at widest setting (flaw of any camera without interchangeable lenses) / Like all electronics lately the battery warning is

Everyone has said this and that about this camera but many seem to be incorrect. I've had this camera, my baby if you will, for 9 months and my only problems with it are two manual controls (not many) that it lacks, which may be given in the future via firmware updates. This camera takes gorgeous pictures and the 8x10s I've produced from it were stunning (even one that I had resized to a lower resolution, like 3MP). I know all of this is hard to determine based on what people say so if you'd like you can head to my websites. Everything on my sites have been shot by the S400. I even use it on a popular photography site where amateurs and professionals convene (fredmiranda.com). I would also recommend any of the A series of cameras, especially the new A80. I might've picked the A70 over my camera simply for the manual controls, but the S400 has better resolution and the size is much smaller and so I always have it with me. I'm on my way to becoming a professional photographer with a nice old AE-1 on the way and a 10D in my future, so I hope you'll trust my judgement. If not go to the sites below. I'm not showing you this for publicity but to help you decide :) All images on the first site explain what post production was done and what settings I used in manual mode.

Strengths: Size, ease-of-use, functionality & features, great quality

This camera is great for a person who just likes to "point and click" to take a picture. This is a high quality camera at a great small size and price too. I definitely recommend this product.

Canon PowerShot S400 4 Megapixel Compact Camera -...

Strengths: Small and compact - lives up to its billing. Seems extremely well made. Excellent pictures!

Weakness: None so far.

I have an Olympus 3030z and while it still functioning fine and taking excellent pictures, it is a little too big to haul around all of the time. The S400 is so compact that my wife can carry it in her purse or I can put it in my pocket when going to ball games or just out for fun. We get many more spontaneous pictures by having such a small camera with us all of the time. Picture quality is excellent and it is very solid and sturdy. I just ordered a 1GB CF card and am looking forward to many years of use. If you're looking for a compact point and shoot digital camera, it is hard to imagine a better one for the price (got it for $360 on-line at Circuit City).

Canon PowerShot S400 4 Megapixel Compact Camera -...

Strengths: Excellent picture quality, long battery life, user friendly controls and self-contained charger (no separate power cord needed).

Weakness: Noise lens motor and it's too heavy and thick to fit a shirt pocket, otherwise it's perfect.

Everything about this camera is great, have not had any problem in the last 6 months of ownership. Amazing picture quality and it is very user friendly.

Canon PowerShot S400 4 Megapixel Compact Camera -...

Strengths: Picture quality. Size and battery life. Design.

Weakness: Mediocre low-light performace. Focus lock can be a hit and miss, especially with AiAF enabled. Slow lens at telephoto. Now RAW.

Pretty good point-and-shoot camera for the price. Extremely portable. The picture quality and noise control is very good at good lighting, but you want to shoot Super-fine and large JPEG. Color reproduction is a little on the saturated side for my taste but it's nothing that can't be fixed in post-processing.

Canon PowerShot S400 4 Megapixel Compact Camera -...

Strengths: Easy to use. 3 minute video. good manual setting options. super small!

Weakness: special battery. awkward mic for video.

I love this camera. I owned a Digimax before this camera and it broke three times in two years, the third time was outside of the warranty period. My parents own a canon digital camera and they have been using it for more than three years without ANY failure. It was an easy choice to go with Canon.

This camera takes excellent pictures. Occassionally I use the manual mode, but I am a very amatuer photographer and primarily use it to chronicle camping trips, vacations, weddings, pets, etc. For someone who isn't well-versed in the intricacies of professional picture taking, I have taken many pictures worthy of a 8x10 glossy.

There are only a few disadvantages. First, the audio with the video feature is not great. If there is any wind during the filming, it will most likely overpower the audio. This affected a wedding video I had taken, but I basically took the audio out and put music in its place. It worked for me. Second, the battery is propeitary. I would have preferred something with AA or AAA, but I always recharge the battery and will soon buy a second battery so that I always have a back-up.

This camera has been all over the United States. It is small and convienent. I can fit it in the pocket of most pants, making it awesome for capturing candid pictures, without carrying a case around with it.

I will admit that this camera is perfect for me. I like being able to stick it in my pocket with my wallet when I go out on the town. I like that if I take it camping, it doesn't even add weight to my cargo. It takes great pictures, close up and far. I bought it at BestBuy.com, mostly because I wanted to get an extended service warranty (bad karma from the first digital camera). But I am sure there are better deals out there for trusting people.

Canon PowerShot S400 4 Megapixel Compact Camera -...

Strengths: Great pics from the 4 MP sensor... and best of all it's SMALL... You want a camera thats small enough to go anywhere yet robust enough to want to take with you... HERE IT IS

Weakness: No battery gauge until it's about to shut off - buy a second battery :)

Bought mine from New World Video... beware of these guy's high rating ~ it's artificially padded ~ I personally had a decent experience but had a sales rep contact me pushing add ons for the camera which was ok because when i said no he backed off... until he offered me a free case in return for giving them a 5 rating in advance of shipment??? Makes me wonder if I would have had as decent an experience if I had???

Canon PowerShot S400 4 Megapixel Compact Camera -...

Strengths: great camera; close-focus unpredictable

Weakness: customer service for repair is dismal.

The S400 is a wonderful camera. I had a Canon S100 and upgraded. A year later I needed non-warranty service and Canon is completely unable or unwilling to provide any sort of estimate without me first sending the camera in to the service center (without an RMA).
This corporate intransigence is enough to get me to:
a) post this review/comment
b) consider others - for example: Olympus S410

Canon PowerShot S400 4 Megapixel Compact Camera -...

Strengths: Small size, expandable memory, great pictures, good red eye reduction if you remember to turn it on, decent zoom, excellent resolution. It can take a video.

Weakness: Video resolution is 320:200 which is not that bad but leaves adesire for more, also cannot use zoom while the video recording is on. It doesn't indicate that the battery is low until it is drained.

Overall an excellent camera. The price went down around $100 since i bought so it is a great buy for $350, i thought it was an excellent buy for the $450.. Takes as good of pictures as the more sophisticated larger cameras, Cannon did a really good job. Flash pictures and full light pictures are flawless. Darker/no flash pictures appear somewhat grained, but that is not a problem. Has nice picture fine tunings and options as the ability to modulate your light settings and B&W as well as sepia setting. Can take continious shots and up close shots as well as panoramic shots. The only main problem i had wasn't with the camera but with sendng very large resolution files over the net so i think the camera is ahead of its time in quality of pics.

Canon PowerShot S400 4 Megapixel Compact Camera -...

Strengths: Great pictures, great size, durable, good battery life, uses Compact Flash cards, good for beginners and more advanced photographers as a second and smaller camera.

Weakness: None

This camera is great! It takes very nice pictures and not only lets you adjust the quality of them, but the size too. It is small and durable, especially in the small leather case Canon gives you. It could probably take a pretty good beating before breaking, but I am not the one that is going to find out. The flash is good and bright and a 3X zoom is great for the size the camera is.

It uses the most reliable, universal, fastest, and cheapest media available in flash form, Compact Flash cards. They are lower priced for higher capacity, they have cards available that go up to 4 GB (try that with xD or Memory Sticks), and they have cheap adapters that allow you to put them into any laptop or desktop computer. I am glad Canon still realizes that they are the best.

Canon PowerShot S400 4 Megapixel Compact Camera -...

Strengths: Compact size, good range of options and controls that most people would use on a regular basis. Durable, well-built.

Weakness: Needs battery life meter -- get a 2nd battery (applies to any digital camera, of course).

I've only owned the camera for 3 weeks and, as most people have already pointed out, it's revolutionized the way I thought about picture-taking -- simply because you can carry it anywhere, anytime, and not worry about wasting film on pix that may or may not be keepers. Take the picture 5x from every angle and light condition if you think it'll be memorable. Durability -- left the camera on the kitchen table and the cat managed to find the wrist strap and pull on it until the camera bounced off the table onto the chair, then onto the hardwood floor. No problems (yet). Quality of pictures is beyond expectations. Also bought i950 Canon printer and the print quality (use Canon paper, not cheap knockoff stuff) is virtually indistinguishable from 35mm with professional development on highest quality paper.

Canon PowerShot S400 4 Megapixel Compact Camera -...

Strengths: Extremely detailed pictures, Great Macro mode, Good movie mood (nice to have a sound feature) Comes with an AV cable so you can look at your pictures and movies on the TV!!

Weakness: No battery level indicator, short battery life (keep the LCD off when you can) I found a spare battery on ebay for $17.00, so pick a spare up if you can.

I upgraded from a 2.0 MP HP Photosmart to this baby and let me tell you, IT WAS WORTH IT. This little camera is very small and I have been so impressed with the pictures. There are SOME manual controls, a lot of the reviews make it sound like its completely void of manual controls. There is a long shutter setting, from 1 sec to 15 secs, manual white balance, ISO setting, and you can turn the 9 point Aif setting off. The macro is pretty good on a camera this size, letting you get 2 inches away from your subject. I've taken some pretty good close ups of flowers and butterflies with it. The flash is very impressive and bright, I wish there was a flash mode setting though so you could control the brightness. There is a flash on, flash off, flash red eye mode, but still. All in all, this is a PERFECT camera, with little qualms. Oh, and definitely invest in a bigger CF card.

Canon PowerShot S400 4 Megapixel Compact Camera -...

Strengths: Small size. Sharp lens. Rock-solid operation - no problems ever. Very quick turn-on to first photo time. Minimal shutter lag. Made out of very handsome material with high "cool factor". Great video!

Weakness: No direct manual mode, although I can adjust exposure times in menu (albeit through guessing about brightness). Wish video capture mode made larger images, but this is a still camera - not video.

8 months later, I still can't find a better small camera to buy my wife for Christmas. All others have too many compromises in image and/or build quality.

Canon PowerShot S400 4 Megapixel Compact Camera -...

Strengths: small size, high resolution

Weakness: poor reliability, warranty worthless

I was fairly happy with the camera for the first few months, until it stopped working. Canon, after initially saying they would repair the camera under warranty, subsequently claimed the malfunction was caused by extensive water damage, which is specifically excluded from the warranty. This would be quite reasonable, if only I had ever exposed the camera to water. Very convenient for them, making a claim that I can't disprove.

So I have two problems with this camera:
1. it suffered a complete failure after only 3 months of light use
2. Canon refuses to stand behind the product

Canon PowerShot S400 4 Megapixel Compact Camera -...

Strengths: Definitley a great flash. Takes great night shots. definitley built well and very sturdy and strong. dropped it 3 times and absolutely no problems with it.

Weakness: Definitley needs to indicate the battery life. Doesn't do that at all.

I think that this is a great camera. It has a lot of great features! I have taken hundreds of pictures so far and the battery life through all these pictures was great. But the only thing that is a negative is the fact that it does not give you any indication when the battery is about to die. It just flashes a couple second I guess when the battery is finally low and then dies. That is the only negative comment that I have about this camera. Another thing that canon should make is a leather slipcase for it. The case does get scratched easily....but it does perform well which is very important.

My Brother In Law has the model before the one that I have and he dropped it on the cement and it is fine. Just a couple of scratches and it still lives on. Go Canon!

Strengths: Small and easy to function, great clear pictures.battery life great if you shoot with monitor off.

Weakness: Monitor malfuctioned at 11 months of use, probably took 3000 pictures before failure. Case easily scratched in pocket if anything is in pocket.

If possible buy extended warranty, I had 4 year warranty and used it.Now own s500 and still like size and quality of pictures of the canon s cameras.

Canon PowerShot S400 4 Megapixel Compact Camera -...

Strengths: The under water housing was one of the reasons I bought the camera. Many options and functions. Has a great zoom and takes clear pictures. So small and easy to carry around.

Weakness: The camera has an overall great look. The only piece that does not fit in is the rubber dust cover along the side.(If that is a weakness)

Overall, I am very pleased with this camera. I keep upgrading cameras almost every year but have a feeling I will be using this one for at least a couple. The underwater housing is an awesome feature, one of the main reasons I bought it. It is cheaper than buying a super nice 5 mega pixel and have to pay $1000 for a custom housing. Easy to carry and have for unexpected times. I researched for a few weeks before buying and every time the s400 would proove the best in size, function, and design (style). Buy it.

Canon PowerShot S400 4 Megapixel Compact Camera -...

Strengths: Light & small. I can carry it on my belt or in my pocket. Nice metallized case. Tons of features. Anti-reflective coating on LCD.

Weakness: Oversaturated blues. No way to put on a UV filter. LCD shows larger viewing area than optical viewfinder.

I am more than satifisfied with the S400. I love this camera for its small size. I did a lot of research before settling on the S400. It is much more than a snapshot unit if you take the time to use it in manual mode. About the only thing it doesn't do is manual focus (the S30, S45 and S50 do, but you sacrifice the light & small factor). 4 megapixels is definitely overkill unless you are cropping certain areas of your photos. At high resolution, I get 200+ pics on a 256mb CF card. Sometimes I have to dull down the blues in photoshop. Also, it would be nice to be able to use a UV filter for shots with sky in them, but that is lacking because this sort of compact camera has a retractable lens. Some people think a 1.5 inch LCD is too small, but really it is fine. So far the only problem I've had is the on/off button contact has degraded and now requires a lot of pressure to turn on the camera. But hopefully that will be fixed under the warranty.

Strengths: Great Color Great night shots battery hold up just fine

Weakness: Lens won't retract in hot weather

Great camera I do have a problem with it that keeps me from giving it five stars. I was in Death Valley and with the 100 plus heat the lens wouldn't retract, as soon as I got in the car where it was cool it retracted. I use my Olympus e10 most of the time but when I don't want to drag it around it's nice to have my s400 which I carry all the time. I never miss a picture anymore.

great little camera, not a great value. but you always sacrifice value for coolness.

i paid 400 for it aug, 2003

in retrospect, i would have rather gone with the Canon A-70 for the value, but the s400 camera is still no doubt a thrill to have. i'm new to digital camera's but so far everyone i have had look at it has really been thrilled by it.

Canon PowerShot S400 4 Megapixel Compact Camera -...

Strengths: Fantastic picture quality \ Very small \ Solid construction \ Easy to use

Weakness: None that I've found

Did a lot of research before buying this Cannon- my 1st dc. I've played with several others and I'm VERY glad I got this one. Just came back from a week in Banff, Canada. Fantastic photos!! If you want a small, convenient dc with great photos, buy the S400 and you'll have no regrets. Some say not enough manual controls. Well, I don't want manual, I want auto- aim and shoot. In fact, this has *more* manual capabilities than I used or will use. In auto mode, NO red-eye. Also, 32mb card is more than many come with. For pics only, we didn't need another memory card but we shot a couple of short movie clips (very good) and those take up a lot of mem so we bought a 2nd card. No battery problems, easy and fast (about 45 min) to recharge (included) so we charged it during breakfast b4 we went out to be safe. Paid $411 + $19 FedX shipping from Beach Camera and got it in 4 days w/ no problems.

Canon PowerShot S400 4 Megapixel Compact Camera -...

Strengths: Size, picture quality, ease of use, speed and movie mode with sound

Weakness: Not many. Just some small issues like 320 X 240 movie mode. It would have been nice for a 640 X 480 setting. No battery strength indicator. Metal finish can scratch easy if not cared for.

I've had this camera for 2 months now. Got it from Dell for $408 delivered with no tax. It was an upgrade from my Canon elph S200. Well worth the extra money. The pictures are absolutely true to life color and the camera could not be any easier to use. It's fast from startup to picture taking to the time it writes to the card. It is very important though to lock in the focus by pushing the button half way before you snap the pictures otherwise you will get very blurry results. Because of this action shots can be a little tricky to get but if you turn off the AIF it will work a little better for the action shots. The movie mode is fantastic. It won't replace a digital camcorder but for that unexpected moment that comes up it's perfect. The quality and sound are surprisingly good and it's perfect to email video of the kids to their grandparents. Canon has made a top notch product here, and coupled with one of their photo printers, you have the absolute best in digital photography. I've always been an HP (and even an Epson) fan but after owning the S200 and now the S400 and a S820 photo printer, I am a true Canon believer.

Canon PowerShot S400 4 Megapixel Compact Camera -...

Strengths: PERFECT size for 24 hr. companion. Super lens; full features; accurate color rendition and quality construction.

Weakness: No low battery indicator, but I carry a spare.

SIZE with minimum 4.0 megapixels, quality lens and fairly full features were my criteria for this digital upgrade from my Canon EOS 35mm camera. The S400 exceeds my expectations in picture quality, features, ease of operation and quality construction. I have printed around 100 photos using Microsoft's Digital Image Pro v7.0 in either 4" x 6" or 8" x 10" formats with a Canon i850 printer. They're fantastic. Proper use of ISO, aperture, shutter speed and flash result in sharp photos, controlled depth-of-field and accurate color. But, the camera's perfect size and auto setting make this camera outstanding for point-and-shoot fun. I'm having a blast!

Canon PowerShot S400 4 Megapixel Compact Camera -...

Another quality Digital Elph in the PowerShot line, the PowerShot S400 is both elegant and powerful. It has a stylish two-tone metallic exterior that is complemented by a 4.0 Megapixel sensor, a 3x Canon Zoom lens and a number of advanced features.

Canon PowerShot S400 4 Megapixel Compact Camera -...

Strengths: Clarity, color balance, size

Weakness: red eye reduction just not yet perfected

This is my second digital camera. Previously had an Olympus 3030 which took outstanding pictures. First noticed this camera for it's size. One I purchased it, I find that the clarity of the pictures are fantastic. The color balance is perfect. The size is unbelievable for a camera of this quality. The programs which come with this camera are very easy to use. I can upload my pictures in a matter of seconds. In fact, there are very few changes I need to make in Photo Shop once they are downloaded. I certainly couldn't say that about my 3030. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who is looking for an outstanding point and shoot digital camera.

Canon PowerShot S400 4 Megapixel Compact Camera -...

Strengths: Hi Quality Images, wonderfully small size, logical button layout, good movie mode, long battery life, excellent lcd, 32Mbyte std CF

Weakness: Manuals could have better organization, 64 Mbyte CF std would be nice

This is really a wonderful camera. Its about the size of a cigarette box and still has good optical zoom. All of the buttons are intuitive and well layed out. It can capture up to a 3 min movie. The stitch feature allows panoramic shots to taken easily. I now have no excuse not to bring it everywhere.

Canon PowerShot S400 4 Megapixel Compact Camera -...

Strengths: good corporate support

Weakness: eats batteries like a hog

Little surprised that Canon didn't come out with a more environmentally friendly effort. This unit goes through batteries like there is no tomorrow - I almost suspect that there is some back-end agreement between the mfg and battery cartel. Why can't they come up with a rechargeable model that will do it all?

Canon PowerShot S400 4 Megapixel Compact Camera -...

Strengths: Exellent design, small and solid. Provide lively color pitures. Plenty feature, including video mode.

Weakness: No battery metter

This pocket-size camera is my top choice after few weeks of searching. If you are looking for a point-and-shoot camera, look no further. You will not be regret.

However, if you want more manual control, I suggest you should go with Canon S50 or other similar products.
