Olympus Stylus 800 is an excellent camera

Strengths: ease of use, on board instructions, all weather camera

Weakness: No viewfinder

I bought this camera for Christmas. I also bought a JVC Everio HDD video camera. It turns out that the Olympus, with a 1 gig card, takes much better videos than the more expensive Everio. This little camera takes beautiful snapshots, has a large variety of specialized settings, allows playback with sound of movies taken, has a huge amount of capacity with 1 gig card, very long battery life even with a lot of use. It is sturdy, great LCD display, very powerful flash. I truly love it. I would and have recommended it to family and friends.
The more expensive Everio is its box in my closet, we haven't needed to use it since we got the Olympus 800. By the way, the prints come out lovely, and I even made a poster size print of a picture taken at a concert--it came out great!!The Olympus 800 will not disappoint you.

A Sure Winner

Strengths: Lots of Great Features Aperature and shutter manual controls

Weakness: None that are worth mentioning.

I had the Olympus stylus 500 and when the stylus 800 came out, my spouse inheritated the 500 which she loves but I definitely wanted the improvements incorporated into the stylus 800. The large viewfinder is great and all of the scene modes are awsome. What I mostly liked is the three extra megapixels and the aperature and shutter manual controls. Also all of the direct function buttons are easy to use as well as the menu function. The on board camera instructions are great also so you can easily learn to use functions you may not use very often. The album feature is great also for organizing your photos. Being weatherproof is another great plus as well as the 16 MB of onboard storage. I highly recommend this camera for anyone that wants a very reliable and high quality camera to take everywhere as well as being fun to use.

Olympus Styles 800

Strengths: 8 mega pixels, Low light ability. Weather proof.

Weakness: View screen sometime hard to see in bright light.

The low light ability is what sold me on this camera. It is nice to be able to take hand held indoor and night pictures without a flash. Pictures look more natural without a harsh flash in my opinion. The camera reduces the resolution to 3 mega pixels when in available light mode. Apparently it uses the extra pixels to gather more light. The literature I read before buying the camera said the ISO can be up to 1600. 1600 is the highest you can set manually but I've seen 2500 in available light mode. Noise goes up as the ISO goes up but is acceptable by my standards.

The camera has many setting and features but is still easy to use and easy to change most of the features while shooting. The built in "Guide" function help explain the features when you are new to the camera.

The lens is 38 – 114mm equivalent in 35mm photography. I prefer more on the wide angle side.

The description of the different mode is very brief. I would like an additional technical description of the different modes. You can display f stop and shutter speed on the LCD while taking pictures for some of the modes. It does not display ISO when in auto ISO mode. I would like to be able to display f-stop, shutter speed, and ISO in any mode. Maybe Olympus decided this would be too confusing for a point and shoot camera. You can view this information after the picture is taken.

I recently took a three week vacation to Greece and Turkey with this camera. The view screen was sometime hard to see in the bright Mediterranean light. I average about 200 pictures on a battery charge. I usually shot between 400 to 600 pictures per day. Most of my pictures where taken outdoors in auto mode or indoors/night with available light mode, with out a flash.

All in all I am very happy with the camera.

A very good camera

Strengths: water resistant, battery life, fast focusing, powerful flash, monitor gains up well in low light and can be used in bright light, very fast and accurate focus, powerful flash, high ISO (2500)

Weakness: Noisy at higher ISO, no optical viewfinder, EV changes sometimes do not work with flash pictures, no 30 fps movies, no sharpness, contrast, or manual wb controls, no orientation sensor

I bought this camera because it is water resistant. My Canon S400 lost its LCD due to incidental contact with water. The LCD is excellent. It's good enough to verify proper focus in bright or dim light. Battery life is excellent even if flash used. I bought a knockoff battery which when new is as good as original and cost $20. Focus is quicker and more accurate than the S400 even though there is no AF lamp. Has lots of scene modes which are helpful, but does not give shutter, aperture, or ISO info while shooting these modes. ISO 800 and above good for computer screen or email, but not great for prints, but does allow memory of nighttime ambience without tripod. 4 sec shutter not enough for high quality nighttime pictures using tripod. Shows aperture, shutter speed in program, shutter and aperture priority modes, but not ISO chosen by camera when in auto iso mode. No manual white balance, but auto settings work pretty well.

A good camera would be a great camera if Olympus:
1. Made exposure compensation work properly in flash modes.
2. Showed shutter, aperture, ISO chosen in all recording modes including scene modes
3. Had 30 fps movie mode
4. Had a slower shutter than 4 sec. (maybe 30 sec.)
5. Had orientation sensor like even cheap Canons do so you don't have to manually rotate pictures.

Olympus Stylus 800

Strengths: High resolution, Superior print output even in 8 & 1/2 x 11 print, Large crispy Clear LCD

Weakness: Haven't found anything yet. just got this last week. If there is any, I'd say it would be the measly 3X optical zoom.

Bought this for my Florida vacation getaway. I took a lot of pix in the beach and some good places we visit. Then took the cam to Walmart to get some print out. Oh boy, 8 & 1/2 x 11 print, as I suggested in the Strength, can't tell the difference between 35MM. This is absolutely a good starting point if you want to get a good quality print out for point and shoot camera...As far as the bundled software....the same rules apply like any other, just the basic. I highly recommended this product...

Olympus Styles 800

Strengths: Big LCD,high resulution, convinient mode change, unique operation guidance

Weakness: Uses expensive xD cards, optical zoom is only a 3x.

I got this baby this week and played with it for some time. Compared with my previous Canon SD400, it has a much bigger LCD which make viewfinding very comfortable. But most of buttons are kind of small, especially the power button. It is light and has a nice shape. In all, it is very good camera that takes excellent pictures.

Great camera at a great price !!

Strengths: wide screen; multiple modes for shooting; easy to use

Weakness: in night mode, picture quality is poor

does not come with x-D picture card (have to purchase separately). Can be used during drizzle or rain also as camera is all weather proof (however you need to be careful)

Olympus Stylus 800

As the latest in that company's "Stylus" line of compact digital cameras, the 8-megapixel, 3x-zoom Olympus Stylus 800 is to my mind the best Stylus Digital model to date. -- I said that about the 5-megapixel Stylus 500 that preceded it, and now Olympus has corrected many of the relatively minor limitations I found in that earlier model. Its body design is trim and compact, with much...

Olympus Stylus 800 Digital Camera Review

The Olympus Stylus 800, known in Europe as the µ[mju:] Digital 800, comes equipped with an 8.0 megapixel, 1/1.8-inch CCD and Olympus’ Bright Capture Technology. A member of the long line of Stylus cameras, first introduced to film-based point-and-shooters in 1982, the camera is built for the automatically-reliant crowd with 22 automatic shooting modes. But it also includes several manual...

DCRP Review: Olympus Stylus 800

I have to admit that I wasn't really excited about the Olympus Stylus 800 when I first took it out of the box. But after using it for a while I kind of grew to like it -- well, most of it at least. While I think the 8 Megapixel resolution is going over the top (and the image quality suffers a bit as a result), the Stylus 800 is a competent compact camera that also happens to be weatherproof.
