Description:

This exciting new addition to the EOS System combines compact size and affordability with an added dose of features and sophistication. Improving on the previous model, Speedlite 420EX, the new 430EX can now be set into manual flash mode (full power~1/64). Flash compensation can be set on the flash unit, and manual control of the flash zoom head is now possible. Improvements in its circuitry make recycle time 40% faster, and since it is compatible with Canon's wireless E-TTL, it can be used as an affordable "slave unit".

Canon 430ex flash

Strengths: Swival for bounce flash, fast recycle

Weakness: None so far

Frustrated by the limits of the on board flash of my Rebel XT I decided to invest in a more versatile flash. I have been very pleased with the 430's performance so far, although I haven't explored all of it's abilities. I have combined my 430 with a STO-FEN diffuser. I usually shoot with this combo at a 45 degree angle. The results are very impressive with natural skin tones and lack of...

You get what you paid for

Strengths: Versatile auto/manual control, Fast respond (charging), automatic zoom.

Weakness: Can NOT act as a master when triggering remote flashes.

I have been having this flash unit for more than a month. This is a very well designed electronic device. Various automatic functions allow even a first time user to use it without any problem. Just mount ant shoot! Zoom/power/distance is automatically taken care of by the flash. The exposure and whitebalance is accurate in most cases. If you are a pro, it also allows you to adjust the power from...

Great for my amateur use

Strengths: Fast recycle times with NiMH batteries. Compact size. Most of the functionality of the 580EX.

Weakness: Lack of right swivel 180 degrees. A little less flash output than 3rd party offerings in this price range.

This is my first off-camera flash. My previous experience has been limited to the underpowered built-in flash included on the camera body. I have to say that moving to an off-camera flash has significantly improved the quality of my flash photography. For the past 2 months of ownership, I have used the 430EX primarily in a bounced configuration when indoors with low ceilings. I have found that...

Best all-around Canon flash for the price

Strengths: One button swivel head, powerful AF assist light, LCD, fast recycle time, autozoom head, better battery door.

Weakness: Auto adjustment for image crop factor does not work with Digital Rebel (300D), small navigation buttons

Pre-ordered one from Dell for a really good price ($225). I had a 420EX and immediately sold it. The new Canon 430EX fixes most of the weaknesses in the 420EX. As listed above, there is only one button to press to swivel the head in all directions (compared to two for 420EX), the AF assist goes farther, recharge times are faster, there is a nice LCD, and the battery compartment door is reinforced...

Best flash for Canon Rebel XT

Strengths: 1. Nice build quality 2. Lighter weight 3. Good value

Weakness: 1. Shorter range (smaller GN) 2. No master mode 3. Less custom controls

This is a very good value flash in the entire Yonex flash line. Comparing to 580EX, this flash has smaller GN and less controls, but lighter in weight and $100+ cheaper in price. Since my Canon Digital Rebel XT doesn't have fancy features, this flash actually is the best flash for my camera. (580EX is great, but it will not be fully utilized on my XT.) The recharge cycle is very quick and the...
